Great Conversation Starters for the Christmas Event

Between the business mixers, the spouse Christmas party and the boss’s open house, it may seem like one starts to run out of things to say. Let’s face it you can only say “How about them Oilers?” so often. And what does one say to the non-sports fan anyway? Here are some foolproof ice breakers to help you relax and even more important relax the person you are talking with during the upcoming festive season.

Hint: Prepare your conversations in your mind, be sure to prepare topics you like to talk about, and practice them before you to the event. That way you will be as smooth as Christmas Eggnog.

  1. Are you staying in town for the holidays?

  2. Do you have may people on your gift list?

  3. Do you have any family traditions you celebrate a Christmas?

  4. How will you be celebrating Christmas (or the holidays?)

For those more adventurous conversationalists or when you are sitting with someone you don’t know very well at a dinner:

  1. Do you remember any of your gifts from last year?

  2. What questions are you not looking forward to this Christmas?

  3. Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer?

  4. How do you feel about all the Christmas carols everywhere you go?

  5. What is your least favorite Christmas food?

  6. Do you have any go-to Christmas gifts?

  7. Would you return a Christmas gift without telling the giver?

  8. What do you normally do on Christmas? Do you have any traditions that you celebrate?

  9. For the student—Are you glad finals are over? Did you have many to write?

Don’t forget that the people you start a conversation with will be relieved because probably they are feeling the same as you. The best conversationalist is one who does most of the listening!
