Navigating Fine Dining Silverware Utensils

You are at a banquet and there are multiple silverware utensils placed around you plate. Do not fret.

  • Outside fork: for eating salad

  • Biggest fork: save this for dinner

  • Small spoon: for coffee

  • Big spoon: for soup

  • Outside knife: salad knife (occasionally absent)

  • Inside knife: main course fork

  • Fork and/or spoon above dinner plate – dessert utensils

  • Very small fork and knife – designated for sea food when served

If you do not memorize what each one is for and the various courses are starting to arrive, simply start from the outside and work your way towards your plate.

Bon Appétit!
